Acid Mammoth - Supersonic Megafauna Collision (2024)

★★★★

Slow, grimy, and dark – what more could you ask for from a stoner band? Well, Greek stoner/doom-metallers ACID MAMMOTH are here to deliver the goods. I’m not a huge fan of this style of metal outside a handful of bands – Sleep, Electric Wizard, and of course the pioneers of it all: Black Sabbath – but ACID MAMMOTH have always been a band that intrigues me, even on their less-than-stellar releases. Something about their ability to write songs with massive weight to them paired with grooves that don’t get old super quick is something I greatly appreciate about these guys, and to top it all off, we get a lot of extra expression from the guitar solos – clearly taking inspiration from Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath and Phil Cope of Witchfinder General. Another thing I should point out is the vocals – they’re this weird mix of high pitch but also a feeling of impending doom. They’re nasally, but not to an annoying degree, and actually add this odd melodic texture to the songs that I just haven’t heard in many other modern doom bands. To sum it all up, give this one a listen if you’re at all a fan of doom metal, and especially if you like stoner stuff – it’s well-worth your time.

FAVORITE TRACKS: “Garden of Bones,” “Atomic Shaman,” “Tusko’s Last Trip”
