In short, this is the Cavalera brothers re-recording the classic Sepultura album Schizophrenia from 1987... plus one new song. Does it rule? Absolutely. It’s every bit as brutal as the original, but with Max Cavalera’s more aged vocals, it’s even more brutal than when he was young. I mean, good God, some of his vocal delivery on here is even better than the original. Plus, the riffs are just as killer as before and with a more modern production, Igor Cavalera’s drums sound huge. Not that the original album sounds “bad” per se, but it was released on Cogumelo Records, and they had a reputation for releasing a lot of very awful-sounding albums and EPs. With all that being said, CAVALERA have done a great job of giving new life to Schizophrenia, just as they did with their re-recordings of both the Bestial Devastation EP from 1985 and the Morbid Visions album from 1986. If you’re craving a modern and heavier Sepultura sound, you’d be wise to give this awesome re-recording a few spins. Usually I’m hesitant on re-recordings, but so far CAVALERA have hit each one out of the park.
