★★ Formed in 2008 in Cologne, Germany as an OSDM band, 2024’s ECHOES OF LIGHT is about as close to OSDM as us human beings are to living on the Sun. In fact, you’d be more likely to hear shoegaze, prog rock, and atmospheric elements on this LP than you would any death metal. Sure, it’s there, but not in a justifiable quantity. While fans of CHAPEL OF DISEASE will be familiar with the band’s ever-changing style, this takes it to a whole new level, almost completely devoid of any remaining metal roots. At its worst, it’s an unentertaining album and at it’s best, it’s a glorified goth rock album with just a smidgen of metallic content.
